The version from Jim Dixon is the one I learned way back in the early 70s.
I have it in an old Sing Out book that I bought way back then.
I first heard the song sung on a British TV programme by John Sebastian (ex Loving Spoonful).
I have always assumed that Germany was shortened to German so that it scanned properly.
That’s my belief and I’m sticking to it.
It’s a great song!
