Hi there, I have been remembering this song too, which I sang at school (it would have been pre 1978 or 1978 at the latest). There was a musical production of The Tinder Box being put on at school, and I remember this song being part of this (but I may have muddled it in my mind over time). The verse I remember, which is probably the last one goes like this.

Between the wars, when I was a lad
I remember the long summer days
