What makes a good pipe-opener?

Perhaps songs with a satisfying but readily achievable melodic range; that allow a singer to comfortably get their teeth into it without feeling stretched?

Do you find chorus songs better, as they invite the contribution of others, building collective good vibes and covering any early-session vocal wobbles/lapses?

Or do you favour a good, gripping ballad that stills the room and earns you extra attentiveness for the rest of the evening?
