Jon Freeman and I both use old versions of Cakewalk; in my case it was a free one included with a magazine that the publisher sent me by accident, and is the only direct midi-writer that I've ever used, so I'm not a very good person to make an informed recommendation.  Having said that, it's good enough, though complicated gracenotes can be a pain to fit in.  Since it was a giveaway, I see no reason why I shouldn't send you a copy if you'd like to try it out: it's small enough to email as a zipped file.
