A CROWN GREEN BOWLERS PRAYER (THE STORY OF CHARLIE & RAY)

Words and music – Graham & Bernadette Dixon (Trouble at’ Mill)

C         F
What will I do next Thursday
       C
Me bowling partners gone?
      F                                                   G
I'll have to roll a few ends on me own
    C
I'll never forget old Charlie
         F
And all those games of bowls
          C                        G                     C
Why did he have to leave me all alone
C
Thursday afternoon routine
F
Upon the Castle bowling green
C                                                      G
Charlie sent the block over the crown
                  C
Then he showed his wood to Ray
               F
Thumb bias to display
          C                                 G
With foot on the mat He sent his first bowl
C
down

First two woods were truly in
Cocksure that he was going to win
Threw down his mat and turned to bowl again
But for this second leg
He opted finger peg
And ignored those first few drops of heavy rain

Pride it comes before a fall
Poor Charlie never bowled that bowl
The lightning struck him square upon the head
Ray grimaced at the flash
Then gazed on the pile of ash
Mouth open wide his best friend Charlie dead

Chorus

The following Thursday came around
Ray stood upon that patch of ground
The very spot where Charlie met his end
He shed a little tear
And he said this little prayer
As he sent one down in memory of his friendChorus

Then to Rays surprise
He could not believe his eyes
Across the green a blinding flash of light
And there holding a wood
An apparition stood
It was Charlie dressed all in angelic white

Charlie said "Don't Panic Ray
I've come back down here to say
The bowling greens up there are magnifique
Ray said that's really good to know
But Charlie said here comes the blow
Gods got you down for a game up there next week

Chorus
