On the 4 December 1903, Ralph Vaughan Williams heard his first folk singer. He borrowed a bicycle and cycled from Brentwood to the home of Charles Potipher in near-by Ingrave. The first song Mr Potipher, standing on his doorstep, sang was BUSHES AND BRIARS. Lady Ursula Vaughan Williams said, "He felt it was something he had known all his life."
