‘At about a ¼ past 11 o’Clock we cross’d the Antarctic Circle...and are undoubtedly the first and only Ship that ever cross’d that line.’ — Captain James Cook, 17 January 1773.

This was in the second of Cook’s three voyages of exploration. His ship was the Resolution. His first voyage was in the Endeavour. His third voyage was to discover the Northwest Passage. HMS Resolution, to be commanded by Cook, and HMS Discovery, commanded by Charles Clerke, started from Plymouth in 1776. On 14 February 1779, Captain Cook attempted to kidnap Kalani?opu?u, the ruling chief of the island of Hawaii. The decision to hold him in exchange for a stolen longboat was the fatal error of Cook's final voyage, and led to his death at Kealakekua Bay.

The Song About Captain Cook by Peter Combe

In Marton town not far from the sea
There was a young boy who grew up to be
A Yorkshire man in every way
From Whitby town to Robin Hood's Bay

At the age of 18, a labourer's son
Fit and strong and six foot one
He dreamed of a life on the wide open sea
And knew that soon that's where he would be

CHORUS
He sailed from Plymouth away from England
Cape Horn, Tahiti then Botany Bay
On the good ship Endeavour and onto where ever
The coast of Australia showed him the way
