Just to clarify: the earliest mentions of the Hymn are from 1898, not 1906 as I erroneously stated on July, 2023.

BTW, the earliest known printed reference to U.S. Marines as "leathernecks" was in 1871, as "gyrenes" in 1889, and as "jarheads" in 1935.
