8th October 1918 Corporal Alvin York earned the Medal of Honor for his distinguished part in a military attack which led to the capture of 132 Germans and the killing of another 25 during the Meuse-Argonne offensive of World War I. When conscripted in June 1917 York had objected to fighting on religious grounds.
