Thread Name: Folklore: Wild Geese
Subject: RE: Folklore: Wild Geese
In Ireland the term "Wild Geese" represents the defeated Gaelic aristocracy who left, under the terms of the Treaty of Limerick (terms which the English broke "before the ink was dry"); they took arms with the armies of Europe, mainly France, and were killed in their thousands. The few survivors, however, thrived, for instance, some of them becoming the "Wine Geese" (a modern pun), who founded vineyards and distilleries like Lynch-Bages, Hennessy, etc.
