Anyone interested in this thread should read the brand-new, very enlightening articles by Stephen Winick about the American chanteyman Patrcik Tayluer (1856-1948).

Winick includes a few of Tayluer's recordings, made for the Library of Congress in 1942. (He sings with the "hitches" later made famous by Stan Hugill):
