Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm Sad and I'm Lonely
Just a few days ago listening to a playlist of Carl Sandburg's collection of folk songs I was glad when for the first time i tried to sing I'm Sad And Lonley. I have added it to other playlist. It is quite remarkable that some of the words have a lot of existing to other folk songs from the west. the tune does not have any info of where it came from and finding out versions of this song was great. One I found was by Burl Ives recorded in 1949 and in 1957 the Roy Head children's choir did a great version of this song I believe Roy was partly teaching a school in Pittsburgh Pennsyvania. The tune for this song brought more fame after 1957 when Alun Lomax was collecting folk songs from Britain. One statement said Carl did go to Britain to see the folks there. The tune got a new lease of life when Alun Lomax met a famaly group from Ireland but one opinion said that Carl did not like that song. If any Mudcat folk know of others who have recorded the song then I would like to know. Thanks very much from Joe.
