I was at a military ceremony this year which included a bit where a line was laid along the ground and soldiers stood up to it with the toe of their boots lining up to it. Some people muttered "they're toeing the line", while others went *pop* as they realised they'd been using or understanding the metaphor wrongly all their lives!
