The orogins of the British song the Mountain Dew came from the tune The Girl I Left Behind a trad folk tune that was first written around the 19th Century around the time of the the USA war. Sam Lover and Ed Dantia heard that tune and thought a better song should be sung by Bascombe Lamar Lumsford wrote a new that sets a same storyline but to new tune not Sam Lover's song from Ireland.
