Thread Name: Origins: Down in the Valley (bawdy)
Subject: RE: Origins: Down in the Valley (bawdy)
I wonder if this song has any value or validity today.Who would want to sing it, particularly to a mixed audience? Not all songs are worth perpetuating just because they exist, particularly as a historic example of a so-called bawdy song.Women tuning in to this thread must surely find it offensive and possibly threatening.
Nonetheless, bawdy songs have been studied and written about by some of the most notable folklorists of the last two centuries. Bawdy songs are some of the best examples of "folk process." I don't sing them myself, but I do find them interesting. So, we discuss and study them. Joe Offer, Mudcat Editor
