I know of folk who refused (1980) to use "mandatory" seat belts ... for fear they may burn-up in their car ... and it was safer "to be thrown clear."

Some other folk I know took delight in running and bouncing off new car bumpers in parking lots.

Most in middle America despise the "Nanny State" restrictions.
