9 April 1731 The ear of British mariner Robert Jenkins was cut off by Spanish Guarde Costa in the Caribbean. This later caused war between Britain and Spain. The capture of Porto Bello led to the public popularity of the song Rule, Britannia!

In 1751 Mallet re-used the text of "Rule, Britannia!", omitting three of the original six stanzas and adding three new ones by Lord Bolingbroke, to form the repeated chorus of the comic song "Married to a Mermaid".
