Started going at age 15. Thought Manny Rubin was the coolest. Mimicked his clothing look - black turtleneck under an indigo blue workshirt and jeans. Marlboros in the shirt pocket.
Saw lots of great talents from inches away - Joni Mitchell, Dave Van Ronk, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Leon Bibb, Clara Ward Gospel Singers, Mississippi John Hurt.
“Philadelphia” Jerry Ricks started out there as a dishwasher, learned how to play guitar from the masters, became the club manager and a talent unto himself.
Does anyone have a full biography of Manny Rubin? I believe he was in the vending machine business before he opened the Fret, then the Trauma and the Market Street Opera House. He also promoted three Bob Dylan shows in Philly. Need details on his life, please, for a Philadelphia music encyclopedia!
