Today has been a mental health day on the political action front. I had way too many subscriptions to topical sites; typically I read a good post linked from Bluesky and subscribed to the writer to see what else they have to say. Substack is where a lot of them live and they try to pile on other subscriptions at the same time. I figured out how to avoid most of those but still had way too many. Even when not reading most of them I was seeing the clarion call of alarm from their subject lines every time I opened the email.
An afternoon of sorting and deleting has left me with a small core group of voices I am more likely to actually read when they post. And several of them prudently post only once a week, not every day. To get through the next four years we must pace ourselves.
The Trump White House has a new target in its campaign to expand executive power: the Library of Congress. Never mind the name — administration lawyers are now arguing that the main research library of the legislative branch doesn’t actually belong to Congress at all.
A legal push to claim the Library as executive turf isn’t a one-off. It’s the latest move in a broader effort by President Donald Trump and his administration to erase the traditional lines that separate the branches of government.
The administration has challenged Congress’s constitutional power of the purse, shrugged off court orders to limit Trump’s powers and unleashed the U.S. DOGE Service on offices outside the executive branch.
They're also going after the National Portrait Gallery, firing the director (a woman). What do you want to bet those black faces on the wall will be moved off view or thinned out considerably.
