In the sleeve notes of one of his early albums, he admitted that his words weren’t so much songs or poems, as “exercises in tonal breath control”, which I thought summed up the stream of consciousness style of writing very well, plus sent out a clear message - don’t waste your (precious) time trying to read meaning into some of this stuff.
