A used instrument store (Music-Go-Round in the US) might have a digital recorder. I found one, a Zoom H-4. It works fantastic, once I figured out what the dozen buttons all do (or at least some of them).

When I first got it, it had some tracks on it. I recognized them: somebody had been using it to record Yo-yo Ma, Edgar Myer, and Mark O'Connor (Appalachia album). If the above is not useful, go ahead and not read it.
