Way back in the distant past I read a few of Hesse's books and enjoyed them all.

SRS, the book and movie which was "..so dramatic and violent that once was enough" was Thomas Keneally's The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith. It was a powerful story but the violence and racism towards Australian First Nations people was unbearable, especially in the movie.
