Subject: RE: Origins: Farewell to Tarwathie--in public domain??
Crossing the dunes at Fraserburgh bay earlier today, Mormond Hill was clearly visible which reminded me of this thread, so here’s my four penneth.
The village of Crimmond, Mormond hill and what appears to me to be Tarwathie, which I drove past yesterday, lie in the north eastern corner of Aberdeenshire. I say “appears to be” as there are far more “Tarwathie” names on the modern OS map than there were in earlier years. This is helpful insofar as, whilst today we have distinct developments such as Tarwathie Croft, Tarwathie Cottage, North,South and West Tarwathie and Tarwathie Smithy, the earliest readily accessible OS map from 1870 has only two - the farm at Noth Tarwathie, as it is now, and the area of South Tarwathie. This suggests that, historically, Tarwathie was an area rather than a discrete property.
Turning to George Scroggie, Guest JimL commented on his relative by this name back on 3/9/2009. Researching the genealogical relationships of the Scroggie family may well be the key to this but a good start would probably be to invest in a copy of Scroggie’s collection of poems “A Peasant’s Lyre” available from such obscure sources as Amazon! - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Peasants-Lyre-Collection-Miscellaneous-Poems/dp/1341512886
