It’s Populism - telling people what they want to hear, persuading them that all their problems are caused by a minority who are ‘different’, convincing the less-well-off that their enemy is those even worse-off.

In 1930s Germany, it was ‘the Jewish problem’. In 2020’s UK (and, for that matter, the US) it’s ‘illegal immigrants’.
