Reading all this, I thought I might ask: Has anyone ever heard a version of this song that was sung in an identifiable time signature or actual rhythm? I would think there had to be one at some earlier time in the song's evolution, but none of the versions I've heard can be said to have beats that are even integers. How some of them singing harmonies together manage to match syllables is beyond me.
