Thread Name: Other parting songs?
Subject: RE: Other parting songs?
I once saw a very effective rendition of "Leaving of Liverpool" used as the outtro of a telly programme (about folk music during Cromwell's Commomwealth iirc). The singers did the first verse or two on the stage, then wove their way down offstage, through the audience and out of the door, continuing to sing as they strolled (apparently homeward) through the streets, breaking off one or two at a time, until they were down to one or two at the end of the song (and of the credits). I can't remember when the instruments were put down or shouldered, or whether it started off unaccompanied.
Memorable, and caused me to add that song to my repertoire. It's all the more effective when it's unaccompanied: that makes it sound slower, and thus more of a song of parting, while actually being sung at the same pace. I've had to write "(slow down)" at the top of my hard copy, and I still end up singing it slightly too fast.
