Here's an Ohio occurrence without Capt. Foster. The Cincinnati Enquirer (July 31, 1843) recounts a recent Fourth of July celebration,
which included the playing of the "air" "Garryowen."

Searching through my chaotic files further, I see that "Garryowen" was played as far west as Iowa in 1838 and as far south as Mississippi in 1839.
