I, too, am planning to dive into a hole and pull it in after me. Hallowe'en is my least favourite day and night of the year, closely followed by New Year's Eve. Both are even worse when they fall on a Friday, when those determined to over-indulge are less likely to have work in the morning.

This house buttons up nicely. The car is in the garage (objective achieved!) and I'll keep the ground floor lights off while I hang out in the bunker with the cats and an Aperol spritz. The outside lights get turned on only when I'm expecting company -- welcome company, that is -- so the path and porch will also be blacked out. Game 6 of the World Series will be played tonight, so I expect parents out with little kids to drag them home in time for the first pitch. That leaves the people I most wish to avoid -- over-excited teenagers and random drunks -- and being inconspicuous is by far the best protection against them. Also, it's still raining.

I called a garage door company and made a date for next Wednesday. My door-opener is apparently equipped to work with a remote control, so that will be easy to arrange. Adding an exterior keypad will take most of the technician's time.

Yesterday I unpacked two small boxes of my favourite ornaments: Royal Doulton figurines of Sir John A. Macdonald and Captain George Vancouver, and various family doohickeys that have always lived in the bookcases among the books. The place looks more and more like home.
