The neat thing about 'consciousness' for the time being is that we are only beginning to approach the sucbject in a technical manner.
I like the notion of the boy-martian trying to understand humans in "Stranger in a Strange Land" and the artificial intelligence coming to consciousness in "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress".
