What singers think they're doing, and what they say they're doing, often has very little resemblance to what goes down on a recording machine. There is an urban legend in the Scottish folk scene that Gaelic singers (and Travellers in particular) do the same melodic ornaments as Highland pipers. Listen to what they're actually doing, and no they aren't, not by a very long way. You need to be very skeptical of claims like "I just sing the way I speak".
