In Chris Willett's version of The American Stranger on the Topic anthology My Father’s the King of the Gypsies (The Voice of the People Series Volume 11) his pronunciation of the word "liars" sounded to me to be close to the word "lawyers" - I was quite taken with this association of meanings so that's the way I try to sing it.
