From "The Come-Back" (Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, D.C.) (Sept. 24, 1919):

"Lieut. H. H. Behney, now stationed at Walter Reed Hospital,...turned in...a number of the weird soldier songs. Nobody admits a set air for this, the Lieutenant reports:

Here I am in dear old France,
Fighting for my life.
Next time they have a war,
I'll send my loving wife.
    It's a bloody war,
    It's a bloody war.

The flag is down, the captain cried,
Go get it if I would.
I said that I'd be glad to,
But the other's just as good.
    It's a bloody war,
    It's a bloody war.

Shrapnel bursting overhead,
   The bullets hum like sin.
I started for my dugout,
But the officers beat me in.
      It's a bloody war,
      It's a bloody war.

Wars may come, and wars may go,
But please bear this in mind,
Next time they have a war,
I'll be damned hard to find.
      It's a bloody war.
      It's a bloody war.
