Bert - drugs. Or people trying to hard to demonstrate how creative they are. Or maybe they just like playing with words and imagery. I've attempted to read some early science fiction, and my reaction was "why don't you just bleeping come out and SAY it." Er...it's also easier to find words that rhyme if you don't have to stick to making sense.

The royal holy wizard weaves the word
That common folk just find absurd
We don't see the emperor's clothes, but do ya?
If we embraced lycergic dreams
We'd understand what all that means
