Glad I stumbled upon this thread. Same way I stumbled upon the miraculous Ms. Fowlis. The video of her singing this accompanied by Donal Luny et al is among the most beautiful things I've ever heard. I am a Jewish guy from Manhattan that has no earthly reason to love Irish music as much as I do but there you go. When I was young, Frank McCourt's brother Malachy played The Clancy Brothers on FM radio, which was my gateway. I play in a session that tolerates amateurs such as I who like to sing the old tunes. I am no doubt a curiosity to them.

I was so taken with this song that i was ready to learn to sing it in Gaelic, which I would certainly butcher in pronunciation. Now that I know it is about a woman singing about her man at sea, I won't bother and stick to Craigie Hill and other stuff that works for a guy singing it. But thanks to all who contributed to this thread, which hasn't seen action since 2021! Quite inspiring to run into this corner of lovers of trad.
