On the subject of fiddle vulnerability at sea, I just remembered seeing a metal fiddle in Stromness in Orkney. Apparently made by a local man to replace a "real" one which was lost sea. Given the likely damage to seagoing fiddles, I wonder how many other metal versions have been knocked up here and there.... And what they sounded like.... Not that I'd suppose too many sailors would have cared....
