Another really stupid 'customary' thing is allowing a Prez candidate to handpick a VP candidate based on nothing but personal whim. This currently has us looking at a grossly unqualified and unstable successor to Trump, whom no one actually vetted or campaigned for. And as much as rational people would love to see a female president, Kamala was also a weak candidate who won zero delegates for the prez nomination, then 4 years later could not deliver enough votes when needed.
