Part of that is the Electoral College, put in place when the slave-holding states wanted more power for themselves without freeing or giving the vote to slaves. The "swing states" in the electoral college are what gave Trump the election, not the popular vote.

The Supreme Court decision years ago called "Citizens United" allowed corporations and foundations to throw in big money to because they were granted personhood and the right to "speech." This leads to a lot more deceptive advertising in play.

Both of these things need to be fixed.
