My bank account was looking suspiciously healthy the other day, so of course I hit a massive pothole that ripped a hole in my right front tire. Fortunately, I was doing a modest 40 kph and slowing to make a left turn; I hate to think what the rim would have looked like if I had been going any faster.

Guess how much a new snow tire, installed, costs in Ontario today? Four hundred flippin’ dollars! And change!

Interesting scene in the waiting area at the VW dealership this morning. The wall-mounted TV that dominates the space was showing Trump being interviewed at Davos, presumably after his #@$&%* speech. Normally, the people waiting for their cars ignore the box, but not today: two customers were almost desperately trying to figure out how to turn it off. The rest of us cheered when they finally succeeded.

It’s at least fifty years — maybe Pierre Trudeau in October 1970? — since a speech by a Canadian prime minister attracted the coverage Mr Carney’s address at Davos has received. It’s no exaggeration to say that it has gone viral, at least in Canada. People are posting YouTube links to the live broadcast, and even the full transcript, on Facebook. That’s a first.
