It's true. At least it was used in WW2.

"Desert pink" was the official name of the color. It was a medium, slightly purplish pink that wasn't quite as startling it might sound. It was used by both the UK and US.

Evidently the color blended in with North African desert sunsets, sunrises, and shadows better than the alternatives.
