I'm not sure why I ignored the music of William Apostol (aka Billy Strings) for so long. I guess I thought he was just the flavor of the month (for the last 10 years or so) but it turns out the hype is true, this guy is the most exciting guitarist/singer I've heard since discovering Tony Rice's music in the '70's. He is the darling of the jam band crowd (he has a pickup installed in his Preston Thompson dreadnought and runs it through a dirt box now and then) but he's also a bluegrasser and old timey player of the highest order. He's covered a bunch of songs associated with Doc Watson and it seems quite a few come from the Vanguard album Doc Watson On Stage which was a touchstone LP for me and I'm sure his efforts would meet with Doc's approval, were he still around. Here's an example-Groundhog

Early is his carreer Billy teamed with mandolinist Don Julin and they turned out a lot of raw, high octane stuff. Here is their informal version of The Hobo Song, written by Jack Bonus. The Hobo Song
Side note- I googled "who wrote The Hobo Song" and the AI mode indicated it was Goebel Reeves, who actually wrote the wonderful "Hobo's Lullaby". Not the first time I've been led astray by AI. They should just stick to turning out their lousy steak sauce.

Here's a fun one he wrote and recorded with Willie Nelson. This is a video of the actual recording session for the single and during Billy's first hot solo Mr. Nelson calls out "ah pick it Willie" and laughs. California Sober

The band here is decked out in classic Bluegrass attire and covering the old Ralph Stanley chestnut Katy Daly (or Katey Daley) at the Ryman Auditorium in a sketchy video. Katey Daley was a historical figure who followed her father into the moonshining trade. He was reportedly shot down in a gunfight with Wyatt Earp in Tombstone AZ back in the 1900's, he may have been cutting into Earp's business. Katey continued pursuing the family business in the Bay area and wound up as the first female incarcerated in Alcatraz, where she died. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnDcIjdjiec

I've only scratched the surface here, Billy's musical interests are wide-ranging and I stuck to the stuff that I'm drawn to but there's plenty of his material to sample on YT, including full concerts with his excellent band. It took me a while to get to the party but I'm glad I made it.
