Yes, that is the remarkable Davie Stewart, his masterly version of the ballad, with his usual initial feeling around on the accordion for the right key to sing it. On recordings he seemed always to pitch his delivery as if projecting to a cinema queue or the 'back court' behind a row of tenements, where he sought coins to be tossed down to him. When the Fisher family were living in just such a flat in Glasgow's West End Archie Fisher heard Davie singing out the back, and brought him in for a cup of tea. Although he was generally known among travellers as 'The Galoot', Davie told Alan Lomax he was known as 'The Wild Colonial Boy'.
