Thanks, Joe. This song is so much fun to sing.
The Wikipedia article is detailed, but it doesn't mention the thing that (I think) caused this to have over 1100 shows off-Broadway -- namely that the vocalists were of high quality and were a pleasure to listen to. Madame Ernestine singing on your YouTube link is a good example.
I don't know why they spelled Izzenschnooken that way. Madame Ernestine is clearly singing "Eisenschnooken," which sounds far more German.
When I helped with a production of this circa 1970, our Ernestine sang of the "Himmelblunken Mountain all covered mit snow." I like those words better than the original (Der Dasserschtunken Mountains All vitened with snow), which I think is laying it on with a trowel.
If you want to sing it, pay special attention to the word "the." Foreigners know it has a strange initial sound, th, which they can't really say, but they don't say "da," either. Rather it's a sound in-between d and th. If you say da, you sound ignorant.
"Puppchen", of course, should have an umlaut on the u. It means "little doll."
