I assume the idea would be that when the blanket came down, her confederates pulled and held it down over him so he couldn't draw his sword or fight back effectively. As for the 'truth' of the story, the third post in this thread claims that almost nothing is certain about MacPherson except that he lived, played the fiddle, and was hanged.
