Subject: RE: Martin Carthy - Health & Tour Cancelled Jan 2026
BBC programmes are usually only available within the UK, for licensing reasons (they are paid for by UK residents, who must by law have a TV licence to watch any channels).
He occasionally lost his train of thought during the interview (don't we all?) but his passion for the music still shone through.
My first paid gig should have been supporting Martin at a concert organised by my school folk club. I was third on the bill, after an excellent local duo called Tabard. Due to a booking snafu Martin had to cancel, so I got bumped up the programme. The local paper reported that I had "stood in" for him, which was something of an exaggeration and not a claim I would ever have made myself. I used my fee from the gig to buy Martin's eponymous LP, the one with him suspended from a crane (for no obvious reason).
Of course I got so see him live many times over the following decades. I have a ticket for one of the concerts next month, so I'm disappointed he can't be there, but of course I understand the reasons and I'm sure the alternative show Eliza is putting on will be excellent.
I can only wish Martin well for his retirement and with his health, and thanks for the music.
