Despite their names being marred by scandal, multiple high-profile Texas Republicans have advanced to the next phase of their campaigns.

Whether it is an extramarital affair, racist posts or accusations of corruption, political science experts continue to debate the potency of scandal in 2026, and why even the most abysmal accusations seem to no longer stick. Scott Basinger, an associate professor at University of Houston who has studied political scandals for a decade, says, in part, “shame doesn't appear to have quite the force that it used to.”

“If shame is no longer functioning, then what we're going to see is the worst people with the least shame doing the worst things and not facing any real consequences," Basinger told Chron.
