The big record companies want a product that will fit in easily with the general stuff being played on commercial radio - there has to be a wall of sound of some thickness; there's gotta be bass and percussion at the least .....

Speaking of recordings of concerts: apparently on Johnny Cash's San Quentin album, that whoop! right after he sings, "just to watch him die", was an add-on by some brilliant producer - because, you know, prisoners being what they are, at least one WOULD of course be unable to restrain his excitement at the thought of killing someone "just to watch him die", even if he failed to express it on that particular occasion ....
