Such an animal exists. I'm not sure if it's the one Jimmy page and Joni Mitchell use. Essentially the tuning happens from the bridge end of the instrument with the power (motor and switching etc) coming from the floor.

In a way it's similar to what happens on a pedal steel guitar, I think.
