Some suggestions:

1. Get a copy of the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club monthly newsletter. In addition to listing club events, it lists almost everything else that's happening in and around New York City (including Long Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, etc.). All three sources will give you leads on clubs, pubs, jam sessions, open mikes, song circles, etc. There is really so much happening in the New York metro area that the problem is usually deciding what not to do!

One important thing to keep in mind: New York City is not Manhattan alone. Maybe that's how the ultra hip trendoids see it, but there's plenty going on in the outer boroughs of the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. And don't pooh-pooh the burbs, either.
