DOG AND GUN

'Tis of a Yorkshire couple, this story I’ll relate,
Who're waitin' on retirement with apprehension great.
In a little mill tied cottage says Amos feelin' low,
“We're to leave this place tomorrow. Wherever shall we go?
Wherever shall we go? Wherever shall we go?
We're to leave this place tomorrow. Wherever shall we go?”

Said Martha unto Amos, “Now don't you fret, ol' lad.
The thought of your retirement it ought to make you glad.
E’er since that we got married, I’ve saved for a rainy day.
Each time that we made love I put half a crown away,
Half a crown away, half a crown away.
Each time we made love I put half a crown away.

“You know that row of cottages down by the Dog and Gun?
We'd scarce been married but a year before I’d bought first one.
The second two years later. The third it brought me tears.
The fourth it took much longer, all of forty years,
All of forty years, all of forty years.
The fourth it took much longer, all of forty years.”

Said Amos unto Martha, “You know I love you so,
And this just proves the wisdom of reaping what you sow.
But one thing puzzles me, though. Why did you never tell?
If I hadn't played away, I’d have Dog and Gun as well,
Dog and Gun as well, Dog and Gun as well.
If I hadn't played away, I’d have Dog and Gun as well.”

Said Martha unto Amos, “You know I love you dear,
But when you said you were workin' late, well, I knew where you were.
You remember our old milkman, the one that was such fun?
Well, I did the same with him and bought him the Dog and Gun,
Bought him Dog and Gun, bought him Dog and Gun.
Yes, I did the same with him and bought him the Dog and Gun.”

Don't know if you're still lookin for it but I got this version about 4 years ago in Chippenham. By the way, the Dog and Gun was a common name for a pub.
