The subject was discussed on the FIDDLE-L list a while back, but they're moving their website at the moment, so I can't look it up.  AEAE (bottom to top) seems to be favourite.  There's also a 5-string banjo version, apparantly usually f#ADAD.  Hangman's Reel is, I believe, usually played AEAC# (bottom to top).
